Donations to Charity

Freemasonry has an enviable record of providing regular and consistent financial support to individual charities over long periods, while at the same time making thousands of grants to local charities and projects throughout England and Wales each year. Contrary to popular belief, one does not have to be a Freemason to benefit from Masonic charity.

Freemasonry is one of the major contributors in the provision of money donated to charitable causes in the UK. Please contact our [ Provincial Grand Charity Steward ] if you know of a good cause in North Wales that would benefit from receiving financial assistance.

Freemasons give many hundreds and thousands of pounds to charity each and every year. What is not generally appreciated is the fact that, unlike all other charitable organisations, this money is not collected by rattling a tin on a street corner. Nor is it collected by sending out letters asking for donations or by putting leaflets through doors.

The simple truth is - it comes from the Freemasons own pocket and each Mason gives what he can afford without detriment to himself or connections.

The values of Freemasonry are based on integrity, kindness, honesty and fairness. Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole – both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.

From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. Freemasons are also encouraged to practise practical charity - caring and spending time and not just money, which can very often be much more useful. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities.

Masonic charity is exercised at every level: individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes. Nationally, our efforts are channelled through four main charity organisations:

The Grand Charity
Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution
Masonic Samaritan Fund

Freemasonry benefits both the Local & National Community

Freemasons make a major contribution to society through their own charities, as well as through donations to UK charities and worldwide disaster relief funds, with members playing an active role in their communities.
