Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Relief.

On Friday 11 March, a massive earthquake struck Japan, triggering a tsunami that destroyed many coastal villages and towns.

Thousands of people have died, and many more are missing or injured.

Ongoing earthquakes have repeatedly occurred since the initial earthquake, seriously hampering relief efforts.

The stability of the Fukushima nuclear plant is also unclear, with major fears of a possible radiation leak spreading across Japan, including into Tokyo which is home to over 30 million people. Click here to read more - Link

An interactive fishing and countryside experience for people with Special Needs

The aim of the Masonic Fishing Charity is to bring an interactive fishing and countryside experience to people with Special Needs.

It achieves this by running fishing events, both coarse and fly, at various fisheries and inviting participants from special needs schools and centres and people who have suffered trauma to come and join in. In North Wales our events are held at Tan-y-Mynydd Trout Fishery, Abergele.

This is far more than just a days fishing though! It enables mentally disabled people to gain in confidence, meet new challenges and achieve tangible results to take away; it helps disadvantaged people and those from harsh backgrounds to renew their confidence in meeting people and interacting with adults from outside their spheres; it helps physically disabled people (including war heroes and stroke victims) to participate and experience something that may otherwise be unavailable to them and it enables our volunteers to give back to the community and have some fun along the way.

The Masonic Fishing Charity is run completely by volunteers and is a non profit making enterprise.

Worried this may not suit your Special Needs pupils? Put your mind at rest by simply watching the following video. Colin Roberts, a teacher at Ysgol Belmont explains all.

Masonic Fishing Charity Appeal for more Casters & Helpers

Why not join in and become a Caster or Helper, you will derive a great deal of pleasure from the experience. It will be your role to involve the children in the sport of fly fishing and show them as much about the sport as you can, by casting out for them, showing them how to cast, retrieve, hook and land the fish.

They are always interested in our flies and fishing tackle and whilst fishing you will have a chance to chat to the children and the adult Helper who will be assisting you during the day.

The Masonic Fishing Charity is a Masonic Initiative and is therefore funded by voluntary donations from Freemasons, Masonic Lodges and the Province of North Wales, Trust Funds or events organised by Freemasons. There is absolutely no charge to you, any of the participants or their Schools or Centres taking part.

A Typical Day Involves

All our events are held at the Tan-y-Mynydd Trout Fishery, Abergele on a Tuesday . I hope the above explains some of work and will encourage you to join The Masonic Fishing Charity and help us all to "Catch the Smile" by giving these children an enjoyable day in the countryside.

Some of the pictures on The Masonic Fishing Charity's website are testament in themselves to the enjoyment that the children get from these interactive days. The excitement is terrific and most are experiencing for the first time the joy of fishing which most of us take for granted.

You won't be on your own during the day. You will be with an experienced adult who will help you through the day. All of our casters and helpers gain hugely from their experiences that they receive from these days and we all become much more aware of the great amount of work that goes on in these specialist schools and centres that we are in contact with.

History of Freemasonry

Freemasonry in the Province of North Wales

It should be noted that it is perhaps unusual, but probably not unique, that the North Wales Province is older than any of its Lodges either extinct or extant.

In the early days of organised Freemasonry, men of distinction were sometimes invited to become Provincial Grand Masters of geographical areas that may or may not have contained active Lodges.

At that time not all these Lodges would have been affiliated to the Premier Grand Lodge.

The name of William Hughes of Holt is the very first reference, so far discovered, to speculative masonry in North Wales. His name is included amongst the list of members of a Freemasons Lodge meeting in Chester in 1660. Click here to read more - Link
